Loren and Alex drove in from Kentucky to see their wedding venue space at Poogans Courtyard and complete their documentary-style engagement session with me! It truly turned into something effortlessly beautiful. As a Charleston documentary wedding photographer, sessions like this—where the real connection shines through—are what I live for.
We met at The Dewberry Hotel, one of Charleston’s most stylish spaces with its mid-century details, clean lines, and creamy natural light. No props or forced poses—just the two of them being fully present with each other. The way Loren looked at Alex, the way he held her close—it was all honest, easy, and cinematic in the best way.
Loren wore a soft white dress that gave a subtle nod to bridal style, while Alex kept it cool in sneakers and neutrals. We shot in the lounge area surrounded by floor-to-ceiling drapes, warm wood tones, and that dreamy Charleston sunlight pouring in.
If you’re looking for a Charleston engagement session that feels relaxed and real—especially with a documentary-style approach—this one is a perfect example. I’m not here to stage your love story. I’m here to witness it, gently guide you into good light, and capture what’s already there.

There’s something about calm and crisp atmosphere of The Dewberry that just slows everything down. No rush, no pressure. We had the space to breathe and let moments unfold naturally—which is honestly when the good stuff happens. Loren and Alex didn’t need much prompting. The way they moved together, laughed quietly, leaned into each other—it all just worked.
I always say you don’t need a big, elaborate plan for engagement photos. You just need the right vibe, the right light, and someone behind the camera who sees you for who you are. That’s what this session was about. Nothing extra—just the good, honest in-between.
Their wedding next year at Poogan’s Courtyard is going to be just as intentional (of course, gorgeous) and full of heart. But until then, this little slice of time in downtown Charleston is proof that sometimes when put into the biggest of spaces, everything can quiet down and find presence.
