A Rainy May Wedding Day at The Island House in Charleston, SC
Delaney and Steve traveled from North Carolina to Johns Island for a wedding day that felt completely like them. No wedding party. A SpongeBob cake with matching plates. Blue and green florals inspired by the Lowcountry landscape. And, eventually, a power outage that did absolutely nothing to stop the party.
As a Charleston wedding photographer, these are the weddings I love most—the ones where the couple doesn’t feel the need to follow every traditional wedding rule.
A Waterfront Wedding at The Island House
The Island House is one of those Johns Island wedding venues where the landscape does a lot of the work for you. Located on a secluded, family-owned 55-acre private island along the Stono River, the venue offers sweeping waterfront views, a small marina, and plenty of Lowcountry scenery just outside of Charleston. The house is also available for getting ready, while the reception takes place beneath a 40-by-80-foot tent with concrete floors, wrought-iron chandeliers, ceiling fans, and perimeter lighting.
For Delaney and Steve, the setting was the perfect backdrop for their relaxed Island House wedding. Their blue and green florals picked up the colors already surrounding them—the river, the trees, and the natural greens of Johns Island—rather than trying to compete with them.
A Wedding Without a Wedding Party
Delaney and Steve skipped having a wedding party altogether.
And why not?
Their day wasn’t built around checking boxes. It was built around spending time with the people they actually wanted around them and having fun.
That same attitude showed up in the details, too. Their SpongeBob cake came with matching SpongeBob plates, because apparently a traditional cake just wasn’t going to cut it.
Those are the details I want to photograph. The things that make you immediately think, Yep. That’s them.
Film + Digital Wedding Photography
Throughout their wedding day, my team moved between film and digital photography, letting each format do what it does best.
Digital kept us right in the middle of the action, while film brought a little more texture and softness to portraits, details, and quieter moments.
We’re not interested in making every photograph look the same. Some moments deserve direction. Others are better left alone. Our job is knowing the difference.
Then the Power Went Out
Because apparently the wedding needed one more unexpected plot twist.
The power went out during the reception, but Delaney and Steve’s guests weren’t ready to leave the dance floor. With tent rentals from Simply Elegant Rentals, the party kept going—and the energy somehow got even better.
Sometimes the best wedding photographs happen when the timeline falls apart a little.
Delaney and Steve’s Island House wedding wasn’t perfectly predictable, and that was exactly the point.
It was a little unconventional, a lot of fun, and unmistakably theirs.
