Belle and Owen’s wedding was one of those days that felt full in the best way—full of people, conversation, and a lot of movement. Nothing felt overly structured or forced, which made everything run a lot smoother than you’d expect with a group this size. They built the day around being with their people. With ten bridesmaids and ten groomsmen, it could’ve easily felt chaotic, but it didn’t. Everyone had a role, everyone was involved, and the energy stayed high without tipping into stressful. It felt more like a really good gathering than a production.
The design leaned soft and coastal, but in a way that didn’t feel overly styled. Pastel tones—pinks, yellows, and light blues—showed up throughout the florals and details without competing for attention. Wicker baskets filled with flowers kept things feeling textured and a little more relaxed, which balanced out the more polished elements. They held their reception under a tent on the lawn, and this is where things really worked in their favor. Instead of going with a standard reception layout, they set it up more like a lounge. Cushioned benches, coffee tables, stacks of books, and personal photos were spread throughout the space. People actually used it—sitting, moving, talking, not just staying assigned to one spot all night. It made a big difference in how the evening felt.
From a photography perspective, this kind of setup makes it easier to lean into a documentary approach. There’s already enough happening—you don’t need to manufacture moments. The focus becomes noticing things as they unfold: quick reactions, people reconnecting, the in-between interactions that end up meaning more later.
Portraits were simple and quick. A little direction to get them feeling like themselves quickly led us to explore every inch of Admirals House and the many picturesque areas on the property. They even wanted to jump in the tub, so I said, “Say less, let’s do it!” I’m always happy to spend time playing and creating if my couple is up for it.
WEDDING TIP: If you’re planning a larger wedding party or guest list, your layout matters more than you think. A lounge-style reception setup like this keeps people moving and interacting instead of getting stuck at tables. It shifts the whole energy of the night without needing to add anything extra.
